THE TOOLS

GOGI offers four sets of simple positive decision making tools: TOOLS OF THE BODY, TOOLS OF CHOICE, TOOLS OF MOVING FORWARD, and TOOLS OF CREATION.  Each of the tools was created by a prisoner, and offered as a way to communicate the simplicity of GOGI with other prisoners.

Think of it like a tool box.

TOOLS OF THE BODY

BOSS OF MY BRAIN

There are three parts of your brain: the SMART PART, the EMOTIONAL PART, and the OLD HABIT PART. To check if you’re being the BOSS OF YOUR BRAIN, ask yourself which one’s in charge?

No matter how fried or fermented you believe your brain may be, there are always new, fresh, and clean cells just waiting for your instructions.

BELLY BREATHING

Put one HAND ON YOUR CHEST. Put the other HAND ON YOUR BELLY. BREATHE, which hand is moving?

Breathing with the entire body is one of the most powerful ways to calm the body and the mind. It is the finest way to defuse a fight, or thoughts of anger. BELLY BREATHING is a powerful sign of self-control, self-awareness, and maturity.

FIVE SECOND LIGHTSWITCH

Keep having negative, unproductive thoughts? This tool helps transform OLD THOUGHTS into NEW ACTIONS. Soon you’ll have a strong, new habit!

Hammering the idea to simply stop an old habit DOESN’T WORK. With FIVE SECOND LIGHTSWITCH even the most impulsive person can switch to a positive alternative.

TOOLS OF CHOICE

POSITIVE THOUGHTS

When some people are being negative, they claim they are simply being realistic. This locks them into the negative and they become part of the problem, not the solution.

While it may feel as if your thoughts are just there, in truth, your thoughts are of your own creation. At any moment you can think of something positive or negative.

POSITIVE WORDS

The words you use, and how you say them, determine what happens in your work, your home, and your interactions with those you love.

Here is an easy filter: before you say a word, ask yourself, “Does what I am about to say create the opportunity for things to improve?” More is accomplished when we focus on strengths.

POSITIVE ACTIONS

POSITIVE ACTIONS are your proof. They are the living testament of your POSITIVE THOUGHTS and POSITIVE WORDS. As you practice, a habit is formed and the new you emerges.

The strongest POSITIVE ACTIONS are the smallest. The small POSITIVE ACTIONS add up to create a much more solid foundation for lasting change.

TOOLS OF MOVING FORWARD

CLAIM RESPONSIBILITY

CLAIM RESPONSIBILITY is a proactive tool that relates to the FUTURE and YOUR ACTIONS FROM THIS DAY FORWARD. How you react and respond is 100% in your control.

You can simultaneously CLAIM RESPONSIBILITY for your future while claiming responsibility for your actions of the past. Both are necessary, but only one is a tool.

LET GO

LET GO is a tool, but is can also become a skill. This tool, however, can be painful for some.

Once you get really good at using LET GO to move beyond day-to-day irritations, you can use LET GO to help you LET GO of the big stuff, the stuff that keeps you awake at night or caught in the loop of bad decision-making.

FOR-GIVE

You can use FORGIVE to get beyond the harm caused by yourself or others.

Let’s say your harm is gambling: you can say “sorry” and “please forgive me” a million times, but if you refuse to give up gambling websites, the harm is still hovering. Once you’re safe from more harm, FORGIVE becomes your tool FOR you to GIVE back to others.

TOOLS OF CREATION

WHAT IF

Impulsive, frightened, angry, and depressed people all have a difficult time getting over the immediacy of their feelings. WHAT IF gets you out of the immediate desires running rampant in your mind and puts you in control of your future.

WHAT IF enough was truly enough and you got down to the business of making your life a positive creation?

REALITY CHECK

This is a tool for when you backslide, make a mistake, fall off, do something stupid, or are tempted to toss in the towel for not being perfect. With REALITY CHECK, we tell you up front you are not perfect.

REALITY CHECK is about not falling victim to the perfection syndrome, but rather getting back on the right path as quickly as possible.

ULTIMATE FREEDOM

There’s no greater internal joy than living your life in the service of those in need. But (and there’s always a but) this cannot be done until you are in the mental and emotional space to actually be of service.

ULTIMATE FREEDOM is doing something for others which probably will never be noticed. That is the true test of internal freedom.
